Compute is verticalizing into fewer firms, energy is being treated as a strategic asset, and governance remains performative rather than constraining. The gap between capability and accountability is no longer theoretical; it is operational.

The invoice is not financial. It is paid in agency, autonomy, and the quiet acceptance of systems that no longer answer to human scale. Nothing here is speculative. The future of AI emerged from incentives we rewarded, shortcuts we normalized, and boundaries we declined to enforce. What feels sudden now is simply the bill arriving on time.

This is the point where adaptation stops being optional. Either humans reassert boundary-setting, or AI’s future completes itself without them. There is still a narrow window to intervene, but it requires saying no where convenience trained us to comply. History will record whether humans audited the system or signed the invoice unread.
