Telecom Still Frames Security as an Add-On

MWC 2026 repeats a familiar pattern. Innovation races ahead, and security follows behind, bolted on later in the name of compliance, uptime, containment. Telecom still treats security as a feature, not as a forcing function that shapes systems from the start.

The exhibitor list reinforces this. There are many security vendors present, but almost all occupy small stands and narrow roles: traffic inspection, identity wrappers, crypto components, monitoring, and policy layers. Stand counts and size tell the truth. Security is everywhere in small boxes, but almost nowhere positioned to shape architecture.

A few exceptions exist, but they require long planning cycles, early partnerships, and commitments made years in advance. Teleport is one example I came across recently; security-native by design, but misaligned with how MWC and platform timelines actually work. The result is predictable: risk is managed after the fact rather than designed out up front.

If there is a lesson from MWC 2026, it is not that security is ignored. It is that it is still framed too late in the process to lead.
